Youenn Gwernig was a writer, sculptor, singer, poet, TV program editor and chef, and an American. Youenn's years in NY are marked by his friendships with Beat generation artists, notably Jack Kerouac. His return to Brittany in 1969 are marked by his strong activism and defense of Breton culture.
BZH New York is honored to highlight Youenn Gwernig's contributions by organizing 3 separate events:
All the way from Brittany comes Nolwenn Monjarret, a singer of traditional breton songs, who is making her first appearance in New York.
She has appeared in multiple concerts with the Chieftains and made a guest appearance on their album Celtic Wedding. She has performed in Paris, Germany, Spain and Quebec as well as in the U.S.
She has been a regular performer at the Potomac Celtic Festival where she has been teaching and leading the myriad dances of Brittany. She performed also at the Celtic Women International Conference for 4 years in New Orleans, Toronto and Milwaukee.
For several years now, she gives concerts every summer in the chapels of Brittany accompanied by a pianist and sometimes by a choir. Since 2006 now she has been singing traditional songs from Loire Atlantique together with a group of six breton singers : 'Les six Lièvres au Chant'.
In 2008, she sung again with the Chieftains during the Interceltic Festival of Lorient. 7000 persons attended this concert which was one of the last concerts that the band will give in Brittany.
