Youenn Gwernig was a writer, sculptor, singer, poet, TV program editor and chef, and an American.
Youenn's years in NY are marked by his friendships with Beat generation artists, notably Jack Kerouac.
His return to Brittany in 1969 are marked by his strong activism and defense of Breton culture.


Poetry Reading of Youenn Gwernig

Youenn Gwernig’s literary works largely reflect passages of his life expressed in the three languages that shaped him, Breton, French and English.

Breton, the language of his heart and early youth remained instrumental within his family and everyday life in Brittany. French was compulsory, allowing Youenn to discover great literary works and indulge his passion for writing when at school. His American dream saw him replace French with English as his everyday language of choice. His friendship with Jack Kerouac led him to translate all his works from Breton and French to English so he could share them with his Beat generation friends.

The poetry reading in all three languages will trace his life through his literary writings and his songs:


Documentary on the life of Youenn Gwernig

Thursday May 20th, 7:00 to 9:00pm
Cantor Film Center at New York University (36 E 8th St)

This biographical film centers on the creative importance of Youenn’s time spent in NY and on the artistic legacy that he left behind for future generations.

The screening will be preceded by a presentation of the film by France 3 producer Bernez Rouz and a rendition of Youenn’s songs by Louise Ebrel and Ifig Flatres.


Concert Diese 3

Diese 3, a trio of young Breton musicians, have been experimenting and innovating traditional Breton music to create a contemporary sound that mixes musical origins and cultures.


Grand Fest Noz

Saturday May 22nd, 7:00pm to 2:00am
Connolly’s Pub Times Square (121 W 45 street)

St Yves week honoring Youenn Gwernig will be capped off by an evening of Breton music and dance with a grand Fest Noz highlighted by performances from Louise Ebrel and Ifig Flatres, Diese 3, and Bagad NY. Fest Noz means night party in the traditional language of Brittany and are known for their festive, convivial atmosphere. Louise Ebrel, a legend of Breton singing, has been performing Kan ha diskan with Ifig Flatres since the late 90’s. The fest noz will be broadcast live on the internet with musical events happening in unison in the cities of Rennes and Scaer.
